    Phylogenetic and phenotypic divergence of an insular radiation of birds

    Evolutionary divergence of lineages is one of the key mechanisms underpinning large scale patterns in biogeography and biodiversity. Island systems have been highly influential in shaping theories of evolutionary diversification and here I use the insular Zosteropidae of the south west Pacific to investigate the roles of ecology and biogeography in promoting evolutionary divergence. Initially I build a phylogenetic tree of the study group and use it to reveal the pattern of colonisation and diversification. My results suggest a complex history of dispersal with the observed pattern most likely a result of repeated bouts of colonisation and extinction. I then use the new phylogeny to quantify the diversification rates of the Zosteropidae. I find a very high rate of lineage divergence and suggest the most likely explanation relates to extensive niche availability in the south west Pacific. I also find evidence for an overall slowdown in diversification combined with repeated bursts of accelerated speciation, consistent with a model of taxon cycles. I do not find evidence for sympatric speciation, however. Finally I combine morphological and phylogenetic data to investigate the mode of evolution, evidence for character displacement and influence of biogeography on trait evolution. I find little support for the traditional theory of character displacement in sympatric species. I do, however, find some support for biogeographic theories. Taken together my results do not support traditional theories on the ecological and biogeographical basis of divergence, even in those cases where Zosterops have been used as exemplars. This appears to be because those theories assume rather simple patterns of colonisation and a static ecological system. Instead, my results suggest that evolutionary diversification is dominated by recurrent waves of colonisation and extinction, which, viewed at any particular moment, tend to obscure any underlying ecological rules

    In search of synergies between policy-based systems management and economic models for autonomic computing

    Policy-based systems management (PBM) and economics-based systems management (EBM) are two of the many techniques available for implementing autonomic systems, each having specific benefits and limitations, and thus different applicability; choosing the most appropriate technique is the first of many challenges faced by the developer. This talk begins with a critical discussion of the general design goals of autonomic systems and the main issues involved with their development and deployment. The discussion forms a backdrop for a detailed evaluation of the two techniques, in which the concepts underpinning each of PBM and EBM are reviewed and placed into context with each other as well as with the other popular techniques for autonomic computing. After considering the operation and suitability of the techniques in isolation, the focus shifts to look at how PBM and EBM could be combined in complementary ways to achieve more sophisticated and versatile control systems whilst keeping the complexity and human-configuration input low. There is then some deeper explanation of the features of PBM and a specific technology is briefly presented as a case example, focusing on its novel and advanced features. The talk ends by looking to the future of autonomic systems; identifying a possible next set of challenges and considering the roles that PBM and EBM may play in addressing these

    Policy-based techniques for self-managing parallel applications

    This paper presents an empirical investigation of policy-based self-management techniques for parallel applications executing in loosely-coupled environments. The dynamic and heterogeneous nature of these environments is discussed and the special considerations for parallel applications are identified. An adaptive strategy for the run-time deployment of tasks of parallel applications is presented. The strategy is based on embedding numerous policies which are informed by contextual and environmental inputs. The policies govern various aspects of behaviour, enhancing flexibility so that the goals of efficiency and performance are achieved despite high levels of environmental variability. A prototype self-managing parallel application is used as a vehicle to explore the feasibility and benefits of the strategy. In particular, several aspects of stability are investigated. The implementation and behaviour of three policies are discussed and sample results examined

    Synchronisation Properties of Trees in the Kuramoto Model

    We consider the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators, specifically the case of tree networks, for which we prove a simple closed-form expression for the critical coupling. For several classes of tree, and for both uniform and Gaussian vertex frequency distributions, we provide tight closed form bounds and empirical expressions for the expected value of the critical coupling. We also provide several bounds on the expected value of the critical coupling for all trees. Finally, we show that for a given set of vertex frequencies, there is a rearrangement of oscillator frequencies for which the critical coupling is bounded by the spread of frequencies.Comment: 21 pages, 19 Figure

    We assessed the effects of ascorbic acid and total vitamin deficiencies on growth, food processing efficiencies and survival of larval gypsy moths. Artificial diet lacking ascorbic acid did not alter performance of fourth instars, whereas diet lacking a total vitamin mix margmally reduced growth. All vita- min deficient diets substantially reduced survival of fourth-fifth instars. Mortality occurred primarily during molting periods. providing further evidence of the putative role of ascorbic acid in cuticle formation

    Multilingual generation of controlled languages

    We describe techniques based on natural language generation which allow a user to author a document in controlled language for multiple natural languages. The author is expected to be an expert in the application domain but not in the controlled language or in more than one of the supported natural languages. Because the system can produce multiple expressions of the same input in multiple languages, the author can choose among alternative expressions satisfying the constraints of the controlled language. Because the system offers only legitimate choices of wording, correction is unnecessary. Consequently, acceptance of error reports and corrections by trained authors are non-issues
